Inclusion and Diversity

We took significant steps in 2011 along our journey toward building an inclusive and diverse culture at NiSource. We believe our success depends upon our ability to be open to new ways of thinking that can help make us a better community partner and a stronger company. Diversity is an essential part of who we are. It helps us meet our commitment to customers, and creates richer, more rewarding careers for everyone on our team.

In 2011, we focused on building awareness, understanding and engagement across our organization. We established state and local-level councils to engage local employees in driving local initiatives. As part of this initiative, we convened our first Inclusion & Diversity Summit in August, where more than 100 leaders from across the company gathered to discuss how we continue building an inclusive and diverse culture.

We also looked for opportunities to continue to build a well-rounded, diverse team of employees. We partnered with Champions of Diversity magazine and radio network and the Columbus, Ohio, branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to host a booth at the Champions of Diversity Awards Business Expo in Columbus. We also post all job postings on sites targeting diverse candidates, including VetSuccess.gov and GettingHired.com.

Also in 2011, more than 2,750 NiSource employees received inclusion and diversity training either in person, or through our electronic Learning Management System (LMS). NiSource employees also participate in affinity groups including the Womens’ International Network of Utility Professionals, the American Association of Blacks in Energy, and Generating Opportunities for Latinos and Diversity.
