Building the Next Generation of Employees

Safety has a new home at NiSource.

How do you learn a new skill? You may read about it or watch someone else, but to build that skill you have to try it yourself.

Given the nature of what we do to serve our customers, our employees must be equipped to properly and safely perform their work – including responding to potential emergencies with confidence and experience.

That’s why we’re opening four state-of-the-art training centers to provide an immersive, hands-on learning experience for our employees to develop the skills they need to do their work each day.

The new centers feature modern, innovative teaching environments, designed to train new employees and current employees sharpening their skills or transitioning into higher-level positions. In addition to serving employees, the centers will allow us to provide natural gas emergency training to local emergency responders.

In designing these new training centers, we’ve incorporated best practices for employee training from a variety of industries, trade schools, labor unions and law enforcement.

We opened the first of the four training centers this summer in Pennsylvania and three other facilities will open in Ohio, Virginia and Massachusetts by 2018. The Pennsylvania training center is expected to serve, on average, 35 employees per day and provide training for 100 first responders each year.

Our single-best asset in serving our customers and communities is our workforce – and this is an investment in each of them.
