During its fifth annual Luminary Awards ceremony, NIPSCO recognized employees, leaders and community organizations for their outstanding commitment.
The event also marked the culmination of NIPSCO’s Charity of Choice campaign. A total of $137,000 was presented to the American Cancer Society, with $87,000 raised by employees and $50,000 contributed by the NiSource Charitable Foundation.
NIPSCO Director of Station Chemistry and Environmental Compliance Bert Valenkamph was recognized with the Community Service Award for his tireless efforts in supporting the American Cancer Society since the loss of his wife. Through his annual golf outing and Relay for Life events, Bert has raised more than $400,000 since 2009.
The Luminary Awards were created in 2012, in celebration of NIPSCO’s 100-year anniversary, to honor individuals or organizations in the areas of: Community Leadership, Economic Development, Education and Environmental Stewardship.
The 2016 recipients included:
- Community Leadership – Barb Young, president and CEO, Porter County Community Foundation
- Economic Development – Jim Staton, regional director, Indiana Economic Development Corporation
- Education – Chancellor Thomas Keon, Purdue University Northwest
- Environmental Stewardship – Shirley Heinze Land Trust
