NiSource was recognized in a big way this week as an industry leader in safety, with five operating companies receiving 2017 AGA Safety Achievement awards for excellence in employee safety.
NIPSCO and Columbia Gas companies in Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia were honored at the AGA Operations Conference in Washington, D.C.
It’s believed to be the largest number of NiSource companies honored in a single year.
“What an incredible accomplishment to have that many of our companies earn this recognition in a single year,” said Dave Monte, senior vice president of safety, environmental, engineering & training. “This recognizes our employees’ efforts to execute on our safety plan based on the Journey to Safety Excellence strategy we implemented in 2016.
The Journey to Safety Excellence is the National Safety Council’s framework for driving continuous improvement in employee safety. It is based on research and proven, effective practices for preventing injuries and illness among employees.
NiSource strives to make safety a core value for employees every day. In the field, employees perform job hazard analysis, review site hazards and use required personal protective equipment, energy control requirements and critical work procedures to work safely. Local management reviews these documents and follows up on any potential operational issues. In the office, managers share safety moments to help ingrain safe work practices into the company’s culture. Using our MeetSafe practices, office employees also discuss safety information such as the nearest exit, the building’s address and identify who is qualified to perform CPR.
These are just a few examples of NiSource’s commitment to safety as a core value, one that we are continuing to grow and foster across our operating companies.
“Safety is a journey,” Dave said. “We care about our employees, business partners, customers, family and friends and our safety culture and training are helping to keep them all safe. We want them to go safely home to their families at the end of each day.”
