Environmental Targets

Our companies and employees have been part of the local community for generations. That’s why with each action we take, we consider the impact on our customers and communities today and for the future. We’re going to be there for you for years to come.

Nearly two decades ago, our Board of Directors established a standing committee to review and guide our sustainability, health and safety performance. And, we’ve publicly reported our progress in our annual Sustainability Report since 2009.

More recently in early 2016, we joined the EPA’s Natural Gas STAR Methane Challenge as a founding member, reinforcing our commitment to investments that improve safety and reliability while reducing methane emissions. And, in late 2016, we outlined a plan to retire 50 percent of our coal-fired electric generation fleet by 2023.

Our business plan raises the bar on environmental improvements, including actions to reduce risks and improve our environmental performance. To support this focus, we’ve identified milestones through 2025 to reduce our methane and electric greenhouse gas emissions, water withdrawals, wastewater discharge and coal ash. These proactive initiatives are expected to reduce emissions to a level exceeding the goals of the Paris Agreement and the Clean Power Plan.

We’re investing billions of dollars to improve our environmental performance, enhance safety and decrease risk. It’s our responsibility to our customers, communities and all of our stakeholders.

And the impact is significant. In practical terms, we’re reducing our Methane and CO2 emissions in a combined amount equivalent to removing more than eight million cars from the road for a year and the water we’ll save is approximately the amount one million households will use in a year. We’re reducing our NOx and S02 emissions in an amount equivalent to the amount of energy it takes to power more than a million homes.

Aggressive, yet achievable

While these targets are aggressive, we’re well on our way to achieving them. Here is a breakdown of some of our progress:

  • Our companies have replaced more than 2,700 miles of priority natural gas distribution pipes over the past nine years.
  • Over the past 10 years, we have reduced our methane emissions from service and mainlines by 25 percent.
  • Since 2005, we’ve invested more than $850 million to modernize and enhance our electric generation fleet – reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 40 percent and sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and mercury emissions by more than 80 percent.

These investments are part of more than $30+ billion of identified long-term opportunities that enhance safety and reliability for our customers while improving our environmental performance.

We’ll continue to share our progress on these goals and the sustainability issues that matter to our stakeholders here on NiSource.com.
