CONFERENCES

AABE (American Association of Blacks in Energy) Leveraging one of our Strategic Partners, the AABE conference serves as an opportunity to connect our Black employees with experts within the Energy Industry.   
WiNUP (Women’s International Network of Utility Professionals) A conference that provides our female employees an opportunity to  
engage with a wide array of industries and people within the utilities. 
Energetic Women’s ConferencesWomen-focused leadership conference attended by professionals in the industry interested in developing and enhancing their leadership and interpersonal skills. 
Hispanics in Energy A resource for the energy industry & utility companies to gain key insights on practices and policies that affect the company from a regulatory perspective. 
SWE (Society of Women Engineers) Empower women to achieve their full potential in careers as engineers and leaders; expand the image of the engineering and technology professions as a positive force in improving the quality of life and demonstrate the value of diversity and inclusion. 
SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) The largest association in the nation for Hispanics in STEM that meets each professional member where they are—offering effective training, mentorship, and programming for our vibrant community. 
NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) Supports and promotes the aspirations of collegiate and pre-collegiate students and technical professionals in engineering and technology.

Our employees are passionate about driving inclusivity and actively elevating a culture of belonging at NiSource. Our (ERGs) Employee Resource Groups create opportunities for our workforce to connect and share unique experiences.  40% of our employees are members of at least one of the seven ERGs.

    Customers on iPadEach day, across six states, our team of over 7,300 employees work hard to ensure nearly 4 million customers, families and businesses have the essential energy they need.  We're one of the largest fully regulated utility companies in the United States. We heat and light homes and provide exceptional service across our territories in Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. 

    These customers have diverse backgrounds and perspectives that help bolster vibrant communities. As a company that places people at the heart of our mission, we are committed to delivering outstanding customer and employee experiences at every level and touchpoint. We proactively engage with customers and other stakeholders to collectively shape the future of energy.

    We care about helping customers address energy costs, make smarter energy choices, reduce energy usage and lower impacts on the environment; and couple investments with effective regulatory and commercial actions that promote affordable, clean energy.

    Helping Our Seniors and Military Veterans Save

    We have created two new energy assistance programs for eligible seniors, active U.S. military and veterans who are struggling to pay past due energy bills. Both programs, Supply Energy Resources to Veterans (SERV) and Seniors in Indiana Low-Income and Vulnerable Energy Resource (SILVER), offer a one-time benefit of up to $400 per year* to those who qualify.

    CommunityNiSource is committed to building and energizing an inclusive culture where our success is fueled by a workforce that cares. Our employees are passionate about investing in the communities where they live and work. We strongly believe that a commitment to service is not simply the right thing to do, but rather part of a larger moral code. Driven by this conviction, in 2021 NiSource employees performed thousands of hours of volunteer work, and the NiSource Charitable Foundation donated nearly $7 million to worthy causes across our service territories. 


    The communities we all live and work are important to us. We are committed to reducing our impact on the environment through a transition to cleaner energy sources, pollution prevention and reduction programs and implementing innovative conservation approaches. Conserving and enhancing biodiversity is a responsibility we take seriously.

    Lloyd Yates - President and Chief Executive Officer

    Lloyd Yates, NiSource President and CEOLloyd Yates serves as NiSource President and Chief Executive Officer. He has been in this role since February 14, 2022 and is also a member of the NiSource Board of Directors. He served on the NiSource Board as an independent Director from 2020 – 2022. Lloyd is building on the knowledge he accumulated as a member of the NiSource Board of Directors since 2020. His passion to drive DE&I enables all of us to work together, regardless of levels within the organization. His approach to pursuing and ensuring DEI centers on four primary principles: Customers, Communities, Workforce and Suppliers. He strives to cultivate an environment of mutual respect in which we accept and value our differences. Championing and creating an equitable, inclusive and diverse workplace for each and every member of our team.


    Shawn Anderson - EVP and Chief Financial Officer

    Shawn AndersonShawn Anderson is Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of NiSource Inc. He has overall responsibility for NiSource’s finance and accounting organizations, as well as the financial operations of the organization.  As the Executive Sponsor for our Asian American Employee Resource Group PACE, Shawn provides strategic direction, coaching and support to achieve their DE&I goals.


    Carlos Ayala - VP and Chief DE&I Officer

    Carlos AyalaCarlos Ayala serves as Vice President and Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer for NiSource. He brings extensive expertise in driving DE&I initiatives within complex, large-scale organizations. Recognized as one of the top 100 DE&I Officers, Carlos is renowned for his commitment to fostering diverse talent and enhancing inclusion across all levels. His advocacy extends beyond the corporate sphere, as he actively supports programs that positively affect diverse communities.  As a first-generation American from El Salvador and the first in his family to graduate from college, Carlos' diverse background and compelling narrative render him a highly sought-after keynote speaker.  

    Alongside his corporate leadership responsibilities, Carlos has Six Sigma Belts, strategic leadership training at the esteemed Army War College and is an adjunct professor at Valparaiso University. In this capacity, he continues to utilize his extensive knowledge and experience to inspire the upcoming generation of leaders in global business, marketing, retail, CPG, HR and DE&I. Carlos has held board positions at a charter school, while also being involved with esteemed national organizations like The National Hispanic Corporate Council and the YMCA.

    Melanie Berman - SVP and Chief HR Officer

    Melanie BermanMelanie Berman serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at NiSource. She enjoys encouraging the development of her employees and is passionate about DE&I. As a female leader, Melanie has worked in male dominated industries most of her career. She has seen firsthand, what investment in supporting the under-represented can do to not only create equity but also inclusion. This includes mentorship programs, diversity of slate for open positions, talent management programs, succession and ensuring development plans feed into all of NiSource's programs.

    Melody Birmingham - EVP of NiSource, Inc and Group President, NiSource Utilities

    Melody BirminghamMelody Birmingham serves as Executive Vice President of NiSource, Inc and Group President, NiSource Utilities. As group president, Birmingham leads NiSource’s gas and electric business segments. Key areas of focus in this role include leading the energy transition of NiSource’s electric generation fleet and driving the long-term sustainability of its gas segment. Additionally, she leads the profit and loss, strategy, planning, operations, maintenance, emergency response, regulatory, legislative and public affairs for the six NiSource operating companies.

    Sandra Brummitt - VP, Chief Procurement and Corporate Services Officer

    Sandra BrummittSandra Brummitt serves as Vice President, Chief Procurement and Corporate Services Officer.  Sandra is a senior finance executive with over 20 years of experience leading organizations through transformation in tax, accounting, M&A integration, investor relations, procurement and real-estate. She actively supports the community in Columbus, serving on the board of The Center for Healthy Families, Gladden Community House and the African American Leadership Academy. Sandra is also a lifetime member of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). She is a driver of inclusion and encourages conversations to gain learnings and educate our workforce on DE&I stems from her sponsorship role of one of NiSource's ERGs.

    Kim Cuccia - SVP, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary

    Kim CucciaKim Cuccia serves as SVP, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary at NiSource. She has been a part of NiSource since joining the law department in 2008 and became Interim General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of NiSource in 2021, overseeing all legal matters for NiSource’s gas and electric utility operating companies in six states. She is currently a member of the American Gas Association, various State Bar Associations and recently became a member of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity. Kim personally commits to building a more diverse, equitable and inclusive legal profession and culture through the measurable and sustainable actions outlined in her Leaders at the Front pledge. Additionally, Kim is active in NiSource’s DE&I efforts and works to build a culture of belonging, understanding and acceptance.

    William Jefferson - EVP and Chief Operating and Safety Officer

    William JeffersonWilliam (Bill) Jefferson serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating and Safety Officer for NiSource Inc. He oversees engineering and asset management, major projects, contractor support, environmental health and safety, work management, training, field operations support, operational excellence, and emergency response for the company. He is responsible for driving operational excellence and safety at NiSource and its operating companies.

    Michael Luhrs - EVP Strategy and Risk, Chief Commercial Officer

    Michael LuhrsMichael Luhrs is Executive Vice President of Strategy and Risk, and Chief Commercial Officer for NiSource, Inc. In his role, Luhrs oversees economic development, strategy and risk management, mergers and acquisitions, sustainability, corporate insurance, customer experience, and energy supply and optimization.

    William Mojica - SVP, Technical Services & Asset Risk Management

    William MojicaWilliam Mojica serves as Senior Vice President Technical Services & Asset Risk Management at NiSource.  William's diverse background in organizations and his own personal journey, being from Panama, allows him to be culturally sensitive to ensure equity and inclusion within the organization. His involvement in participation on ERGs has allowed him to share his story, and most importantly, ensure that everyone's voice is heard. William is active in NiSource’s DE&I efforts and works to build a culture of belonging, understanding and acceptance. He has a passion for people and is dedicated to driving safety culture, process safety, quality management and asset management.

    Jennifer Montague - President and Chief Operating Officer, Columbia Gas of Virginia

    Jennifer MontagueJennifer Montague serves as President and Chief Operating Officer, Columbia Gas of Virginia. Jennifer's passion for music is evident in her work as a fundraiser and visionary leader, as she has served on the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee for Merit School of Music for six years. Her diverse background has allowed Jennifer to be an advocate for women and people of color. Jennifer is also a Board Member for Edgewater Health, United Way of Northwest Indiana and Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago & Northwest Indiana.

    Chuck Shafer - VP, Health, Safety & Environmental Execution

    Chuck ShaferChuck Shafer serves as Vice President Health, Safety & Environmental Execution. As a devoted family man, setting a strong DE&I example starts at home. Creating equity is important to Chuck, as he knows firsthand the challenges and barriers that women in the workforce have. As an executive sponsor of NiSource's women's ERG, he is constantly ensuring that women's programs remain a high priority for NiSource. Chuck believes it is most important to have clear goals and direction driven with positive energy to create a healthy and collaborative culture. The utility industry has a service-focused culture, which is one of the reasons why Chuck enjoys working at NiSource.
