We’re making significant investments to ensure that we can continue to deliver energy to our customers where and when they need it, and in a way that is environmentally responsible and affordable.
This includes investing nearly $30 billion in identified long-term system modernization and growth programs over the next 20+ years.
We have strong ties to our local communities and we are constantly working to manage and improve our environmental performance. To support this focus, we’ve identified targets through 2030 to reduce our methane and electric generation greenhouse gas emissions, water withdrawals, wastewater discharge and coal ash.
Environmental impact targets
| 2025 Reductions (From 2005 Levels) | 2030 Reductions (From 2005 Levels) | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Nitrogen Oxides, Sulfur Dioxide & Mercury | 90% | 99% | On Track |
| Water Withdrawal | 90% | 99% | On Track |
Waste Water | 90% | 99% | On Track |
| Coal Ash Generated | 60% | 100% | On Track |
| Greenhouse Gas (Electric Generation) | 50% | 90%+ | On Track |
| Methane (Pipeline Replacement) | 50% | 50%+ | On Track |
Here at NiSource we've made remarkable improvements in stewarding the environment in our communities. I'm particularly proud of the way that we have integrated into the community through our NiSource environmental action teams and through the improvements we've made in our operations to make the landscape better for not only our customers, but for our employees that live in the community. We currently have a program where we're improving habitat for pollinators, such as butterflies, along our right-of-way.
I'm proud that NiSource is developing targets that are forward-looking. It makes the commitment to our stakeholders, our communities, our customers that we will continue to make significant environmental progress. It's important especially in today's policy environment where things are changing rapidly and there are many different views. Regardless of that, NiSource's targets establish that commitment into the future that we will continue to improve and steward the environment in our communities regardless of the changes that may be happening in the policy environment.
Our electric generation strategy - Your Energy, Your Future
We made significant progress in 2019 on transforming our electric business. We have three wind projects in progress in Indiana and are actively seeking additional renewable resources to replace our coal-fired generating capacity, all of which is scheduled to be retired by 2028. From a base year of 2005, these initiatives are expected to drive a 90 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and to save customers more than $4 billion over 30 years.
We also continued to execute on our seven-year electric infrastructure modernization program that we began in 2016. This included enhancements to our electric transmission and distribution system designed to further improve system safety and reliability. These strategies were supported by the successful conclusion of our electric base rate case, which also contained elements that reduce our risk profile.
Supporting sustainability
In November 2020, NiSource was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index for the seventh consecutive year. We are one of seven U.S. utility companies on the list, which acknowledges advancements we continue to make in our sustainability strategy.
This includes aggressive greenhouse gas reduction targets and executing against approximately $40 billion of long-term infrastructure and safety investments over 20 years. We are committed to delivering energy safely, reliably and in an environmentally responsible and sustainable way.
