Digital Transformation Requires Transforming How We Think
descriptivetext

In recent times, "transformation" is a word that we hear a lot. It’s often shorthand for adopting new technologies or launching ambitious business innovations. But true transformation involves more than implementing new systems.

Throughout history, individuals and organizations have entered transformations to adapt, overcome challenges and thrive. From ancient myths to modern-day success stories, transformational journeys are fundamental to the human experience.

The ability to evolve has always marked resilience and progress. At its core, transformation starts with the right mindset: a willingness to challenge the status quo, embrace uncertainty and move forward with purpose.

Transformation is Vital

Now more than ever, organizations must keep pace with rapid advancements to stay competitive and meet evolving customer expectations. At NiSource, we are well down the path of our transformation journey, starting with replacing and upgrading legacy systems. We’re implementing modern, integrated platforms for field operations to streamline work and respond more quickly to customer needs. We’re also investing in smart infrastructure like advanced metering technology to improve efficiency and empower our customers.

The case for modernized technology and systems is clear. These innovations mean real benefits across all six of our utility brands: our field crews work more safely and efficiently, and our customers get more reliable, responsive service. Modernizing our digital platforms will position us to operate better than ever before.

But technology alone isn’t enough.

Mindset Matters

To reap the benefits this technology enables, we cannot deny the human aspect of transformation. Digital transformation requires more than implementing new software or systems; it requires a holistic shift.

True digital transformation goes beyond simply adopting new technologies. At the core, transformation requires a change in mindset at every level of the organization. It necessitates a fundamental shift in the way we lead and operate. Leaders must empower those closest to the work to make decisions, and everyone across the company needs to embrace new ways of thinking.

A cultural shift won’t happen overnight. It takes deliberate effort: training, communication and a lot of listening. But, for the organizations that put in the work, the results will be powerful. We’ve seen that when teams feel ownership over new processes and tools, they adopt them more fully and find additional improvements. For example, as part of our transformation, we created space for field technicians and frontline managers to help shape how new tools were implemented. Their feedback isn’t just informing the rollout; it has improved it. That kind of ownership makes transformation stick.

Look for A Better Way

One of our core values is to “Look for a Better Way.” It’s a simple phrase, but it carries deep meaning. It reminds us that transformation is a journey, not a one-time implementation. It challenges us to stay curious, humble and focused.

In practice, this mindset drives value. We deliberately encourage employees at all levels to question old habits and suggest new approaches. Empowering our teams to seek better ways of working ensures that improvements aren’t simply dictated top-down; they are co-created. We want our workforce to be an active partner in the change, not just a passive recipient.

Looking Ahead

The energy industry is evolving fast, from decarbonization to digitalization and rising customer needs. As we look to the future, the organizations that thrive won’t just be the ones with the best technology. They’ll be the ones with the best mindset, the ones that see change not as a threat but as a catalyst, the ones that empower their people to lead, learn and grow.

That’s the kind of transformation that lasts. And that’s the kind of transformation we’re building, one mindset at a time.
